Four Steps to Happier Summer Skin

When the flowers flourish and the sun moves from behind the clouds, you happily grab your swimsuit, some friends, and head for the nearest beach. The summer season is in full swing and you’re ready to say goodbye to the winter chill. But should you say goodbye to your winter skincare routine too? Sure, it worked for the dry, cold winter season, but will it still work during the summer?

Developing a solid skincare routine can take some planning. Sometimes we’re just happy if we manage to wash off our mascara before bed, let alone perform a 4, 6, or even 12 step routine.  Well, not to worry, we’ve put together a dead-easy summer skincare routine guaranteed to unmask your true summer glow. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Cleanse

Wash your face with a daily cleanser to remove the dirt, oil, and make-up that collects in your pores throughout the day. Remember to wash both at night and in the morning to create a fresh canvas for your daily make-up.  Pro tip: Try not to lean your face on your hands during the day; this will help you avoid trapping dirt causing acne and make-up in your pores.

Step 2: Tone

This is one that most people skip over, but toner can be a hero in your skincare routine, especially for people with oily or acne-prone skin. It’s also beneficial for an extra cleanse, especially in the summer when you find yourself applying sunscreen and blotting to keep cool from the summer heat. Using a nice toner with rose or lavender water will help ensure your skin is reinvigorated each and every night.

Step 2: Moisturize

The summer months are usually humid and hot. The thought of adding cream to your face only to sweat it off can make you cringe. However, applying a good moisturizer is an essential step in your summer skincare routine. Hydration is the key to healthy, glowing skin and a high quality moisturizer will help lock in moisture without clogging up your pores. Pro tip: Use a moisturizer with sunscreen to protect your skin from damaging solar rays and remember to moisturize day and night for best results.

Step 3 (Morning): Protect

Exposure to UV radiation is the fastest way to age your skin and also puts you at risk for developing melanoma (skin cancer!).  This is doubly important during the summer when we’re frequently laying poolside or at the beach, however even minimal time outdoors, regardless of the season, is ample time for the sun to do its damage. Step 4 (Evening): Nourish
